How climate change can affect the distribution range and conservation status of an endemic bird from the highlands of eastern Brazil: the case of the Gray-backed Tachuri, Polystictus superciliaris (Aves, Tyrannidae) Biota Neotropica
Hoffmann,Diego; Vasconcelos,Marcelo Ferreira de; Martins,Rogério Parentoni.
The Gray-backed Tachuri (Polystictus superciliaris) is a Tyrannidae restricted to eastern Brazilian highlands. Its population and range are still thought to be declining mainly due to habitat loss, caused by land use. We evaluated the impacts on its range (increase or decrease, displacement in latitude and altitude), considering possible effects caused by inappropriate land use and climatic changes. For this purpose, we modeled its current range and estimated its overlap between the predicted area and future scenarios. We also analyzed the efficiency of the Brazilian reserves to the species’ protection. The range established by the Maxent model was 76.1% lower than that available in the literature and presented a decrease in the future. Range contraction...

Measuring the Welfare Loss to Landowners of Future Geographic Shifts In the Suitable Habitat for Vegetation Due to Climate Change AgEcon
Howard, Peter H..
Scientists predict that global warming will cause suitable habitat ranges to shift for many plant species, including blue oak in California. If proximity to particular land cover types significantly affects human welfare, any such shifts will affect household welfare, resulting in an indirect cost that is currently unaccounted for in the climate change literature. Using a hedonic pricing model, the marginal values of blue oaks and the land cover types most likely to replace them are estimated at multiple spatial scales using single family residences sold in Kern County from 1997 to 2003. In addition to the common identification problems of specification error and omitted variable bias, the variables measuring the degree of proximity of a property to...

Modélisation de la distribution d’espèces benthiques par l’utilisation d’une plateforme multi-agents ArchiMer
Razafimahefa, Ntsoa Rakoto.
In a context of climate change, understanding the response of species to changes in the environment and the implications for their geographic distribution is paramount. Species distribution models (SDM), through the formulation of relationships between the organism and its environment, provide a tool to explore species response to different types of environmental stresses. This study presents the development and a first application of a mechanistic and generic SDM, using a multi-agent modelling platform: NetLogo. The model allows to simulate the spatialized population dynamic of a bentho-pelagic species, in response to environmental variations. The model developed is an individual-based (IBM) mechanistic model, which incorporates a DEB (Dynamic Energy...

Predicting Geographic Ranges of Marine Animal Populations Using Stable Isotopes: A Case Study of Great Hammerhead Sharks in Eastern Australia ArchiMer
Raoult, Vincent; Trueman, Clive N; Kingsbury, Kelsey M; Gillanders, Bronwyn M; Broadhurst, Matt K; Williamson, Jane E; Nagelkerken, Ivan; Booth, David J; Peddemors, Victor; Couturier, Lydie Ir; Gaston, Troy F.
Determining the geographic range of widely dispersed or migratory marine organisms is notoriously difficult, often requiring considerable costs and typically extensive tagging or exploration programs. While these approaches are accurate and can reveal important information on the species, they are usually conducted on only a small number of individuals and can take years to produce relevant results, so alternative approaches may be preferable. The presence of latitudinal gradients in stable carbon isotope compositions of marine phytoplankton offers a means to quickly determine likely geographic population ranges of species that rely on productivity from these resources. Across sufficiently large spatial and temporal scales, the stable carbon isotopes of...
